Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum Grade 10 or equivalent qualification
  • Ability to read and write
  • Must be prepared to work shifts on a rotational basis
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team

One year of experience in the Public Service is only an added advantage, meaning it is not listed as a compulsory requirement.

Duties and Responsibilities

Successful Food Service Aids will perform general food-service duties under the supervision of the Food Service Supervisor.

Responsibilities include:

  • Pre-preparation and preparation of food
  • Dishing up meals for patients
  • Weighing ingredients for food production
  • Applying hygiene and safety measures
  • Transporting breakfast, lunch and supper from Food Services to hospital wards
  • Maintaining food-service equipment and trolleys
  • Checking that packed meals and snacks are correct
  • Packing food trolleys
  • Signing the appropriate meal-control forms
  • Carrying out other lawful duties assigned by the Food Service Supervisor or Manager

The position involves working in a hospital environment, so applicants should be comfortable working shifts and following strict food hygiene and safety procedures.

Selection Process

Tambo Memorial Hospital may also use practical exercises or tests during recruitment for non-SMS positions to determine whether applicants are suitable for the job.

The recommended candidate may be required to undergo medical surveillance in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements.
