Successful candidates may work across sectors including residential estates, corporate and financial services, retail and wholesale, logistics and distribution, mining and resources, oil and gas, and education.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Valid PSIRA Grade B Certificate
- Matric / Grade 12
- Previous security experience
- Knowledge of access control, CCTV and alarm systems
- Strong observation and reporting skills
- Good communication skills
- Ability to manage conflict calmly and professionally
- Physical fitness and willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays
A driver’s licence may be advantageous, depending on the site.
Firearm competency for business purposes is also advantageous.
Duties and Responsibilities
Grade B Security Officers will be responsible for protecting clients, employees, visitors and property.
Key duties include supervising and coordinating security personnel, conducting security briefings, allocating duties and shifts, maintaining discipline and ensuring that site procedures are followed.
Access Control
Security Officers will:
- Control entry and exit points
- Verify identities
- Maintain visitor records
- Monitor vehicle and pedestrian movement
- Prevent unauthorised access
Patrols and Site Security
Successful candidates will conduct regular patrols, building inspections and perimeter checks.
They may also be required to ensure that gates, windows and doors are properly secured after operating hours.
CCTV and Surveillance
Security Officers may monitor:
- CCTV cameras
- Alarm systems
- Access-control systems
- Other security equipment
Candidates should be able to identify suspicious behaviour and respond appropriately to possible security threats.
Emergency and Incident Response
Successful candidates will respond to alarms, emergencies and security incidents.
They may also be required to manage trespassers or offenders professionally and according to applicable procedures.
Reporting and Administration
Security Officers must maintain accurate:
- Incident reports
- Observation logs
- Inspection records
- Client communication records
Computer literacy is therefore important, including the ability to use MS Office and relevant reporting systems.
Skills Required
Thorburn is looking for candidates with good verbal and written communication, strong attention to detail, situational awareness, leadership abilities and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
