SASSA Online Application Guide

This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to apply for various SASSA social grants online, including grants for child support, care dependency, disability, foster care, grant-in-aid, older persons, war veterans, social relief of distress, and the special R350 grant. You may be eligible for one or more of these grants based on specific criteria.

Where to Replace Your SASSA Gold Card:

As of March 5, 2025, beneficiaries of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) are required to replace their SASSA Gold Cards with the new Postbank Black Cards by March 20, 2025.

Where to Replace Your SASSA Gold Card:

  • Participating Retailers: You can obtain your Postbank Black Card at designated retailers, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Boxer, and select Pick n Pay stores. Please note that not all branches offer this service, so it’s advisable to confirm availability before visiting

How to Locate the Nearest Card Replacement Site:

  1. Dial *120*355# on your mobile phone.

  2. Press 1 to begin the process.

  3. Select your province by entering the corresponding number.

  4. Choose your municipality to receive a list of available card replacement sites in your area.

Required Documentation:

To obtain your new Postbank Black Card, please bring a valid South African ID or a temporary ID document. The card replacement service is free of charge.

How to Apply for SASSA Grants Online

The SASSA online application process is simple, starting with account registration, followed by completing and submitting the grant application. You can select the grant type that applies to you and complete the online application form.

Creating a SASSA Account

  1. Visit the SASSA services web portal.
  2. Click on “Register A New Account.”
  3. Agree to the terms of registration and confirm by clicking the “Apply” button.
  4. Complete the registration form with your personal information, including:
    • Citizenship (South African citizen/permanent resident/refugee)
    • ID number (which serves as your username)
    • ID document type (ID document/temporary ID)
    • User title (Mr/Mrs/Miss)
    • Surname and full name
    • Active email address
    • Secure password (must meet specific security requirements)
    • South African cellphone number
  5. Click “Register Me” to create your account. You’ll receive a confirmation with an OTP or link on your cellphone to finalize your registration. Once your account is ready, you can proceed with your grant application.

Applying for a Social Grant

  1. Log in to your SASSA account.
  2. Go to “Social Grant Options” and choose the grant you wish to apply for.
  3. Complete the application form with the necessary information.
  4. Print the affidavit generated by SASSA, sign it before a commissioner of oaths, and also complete the Bank Payment Form.
  5. Upload certified supporting documents in PDF format, which vary by grant type. These may include:
    • For the Child Support Grant: ID copies for applicant and spouse (if applicable), marital status proof, banking details letter, income proof (if applicable), and the SASSA affidavit.
    • For the Foster Child Grant: Similar documents as above, based on the applicant’s circumstances.
    • For the Older Persons Grant: ID copies, marital status proof, banking details letter, income proof, and SASSA affidavit.
  6. Once all required documents are uploaded, submit your application by clicking “Submit.”
  7. You can check your application status online afterward.

Important Information

After submission, you will receive an application ID (or reference number) and a dated receipt with the assisting SASSA official’s name. Keep these for your records. Note that the application process is entirely free.

Application Processing Time

SASSA may take up to three months to process an application. Payments, if approved, are backdated to the application date. You can check the current payment dates to find out when you will receive funds.

Notification of Application Outcome

If your application is denied, SASSA will inform you in writing. You may appeal the decision within 90 days by submitting your appeal to the Minister of Social Development.
